The pastry packaging market is in full swing. Combination of cardboard and plastic is common.
Bakeries increasingly offer the possibility to order pastries and have them delivered at home. Bunzl Retail & Industry responds to this with specific packaging, such as refrigerated packaging. A sister company within the Bunzl organization also supplies cooling elements. Another trend is that the consumer creates more moments of pampering. This increases the demand for single packs for small cakes or two pieces of cake. During a visit to the supermarket it is made more attractive to buy small pastries. Good portion packaging plays an important role for the presentation on the shelf and the experience of the consumer.
Hans Veurink: key account manager at Bunzl: "A lot is happening in the confectionery market. We receive questions about shelf presentation, printing and making packaging more sustainable. We can make pastry packaging more sustainable in various ways. Is the focus on reuse? On material reduction. Whether to reduce food waste? To processing after use? Or to the use of alternative and renewable raw materials? We discuss this together with customers in order to arrive at a clear strategy. Once this is clear, we will start working on the packaging concepts. who give substance to this and we involve our partners in these processes, for example, "says Veurink. A good example is the sustainability of packaging at one of our customers. Veurink continues: "Together with us they developed a PaperWise pastry box. This is a socially responsible type of paper and cardboard, which is made from agricultural waste."
With pastry packaging, the visibility and presentation of the product is always taken into account. Appearance plays a major role, because pastry has to look festive and luxurious. A graceful and transparent packaging is therefore often desired. There must also be room for communication on the packaging. This is not just about the ingredients, but also about branding the customer and information about the correct disposal of the packaging. Furthermore, a cake packaging must be sturdy, for protection during transport. This is because prepackaged pastries must not fall over during transport. And all of this must be combined in such a way that it can be used properly on the packaging line and that the packaging has the least possible impact on the environment. "
A combination of cardboard and plastic as a material choice is common. The basic principle in these packaging is that the cardboard and plastic can easily be separated by the consumer. There are also customers who opt for a completely transparent packaging and opt for a completely plastic solution. In display case sales, on the other hand, you see completely cardboard pastry packaging again, because the consumer sees the pastry presented separately in the display case and then accepts it in a closed cardboard box, because the pastry has already been visible.
